SS8-Sept 6/11- Definitions

Unit: Introduction

Culture- How a group of people has similar behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and other human works.
Race- a term applied strictly to the looks of a person but is usually a misconception and inappropriately used to classify people. Race is socially constructed (the idea of a specific group).
Ethnicity- the sense of similarity between people who share physical, language, behavior, culture or environment characteristics.
Heritage- things that are held onto and passed down through generations by a certain group of people.
Native- something is from a certain or local area.
Social organization- is the way a society organizes its members into small groups (families, interest groups, friends, occupations, religions, etc.)
Customs- the rules, behavior, rituals, celebrations, and beliefs of a culture usually passed down through generations of individuals but can change over time. Not all members of a cultural group will have the same customs.
Spiritual- patterns of beliefs held by a group of people that help them to answer questions such as the meaning of life or mysteries of nature. Spirituality can be different between groups, individuals, communities, and societies.

Economic system- the ways a group produces and distributes goods, services, and resources to meet the needs and wants of the group.
